Teaching and Developing the Next Generation

Page history last edited by Andy Pethan 12 years, 10 months ago

I'm Andy Pethan, and I'm passionate about changing how we teach and develop kids.  I grew up in Appleton, WI, as an avid K'nex builder, baseball player, and future problem solver.  I headed east for college to the 300-student, 5-year-old Olin College of Engineering.  It was in this innovative learning environment that I started to deeply question our K-12 education.  After a couple years, I took a year off with a group of students and started an educational software business.  We didn't get as far as we hoped, but I returned to school with a deep passion for both education and software development.  Currently, I am about to graduate from Olin, get married, move to Minnesota, and begin a 1-year certification program to be a high school math teacher (all in three weeks!).

This Website

This website serves as both a public collection of my personal background and aspirations and a home for new ideas in education that I want to see publicly shaped and improved.  As I learn, grow, and experience new things, I will continue to add to and update this wiki.

The website was started as the final portfolio project for Olin College's implementation of the Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP), a program I helped to design and get started during my time at Olin.  The GCSP portfolio asks students to reflect on the major project experiences, interdisciplinary thought, entrepreneurial activities, global experiences, and service learning opportunities that have helped prepare them to take on the major challenges that face our world.  The grand challenge I am excited about is changing how students learn and grow in school to become well-prepared and fulfilled adults.  I hope to join the many innovative educators, entrepreneurs, psychologists, parents, engineers, and community members who are already finding new models to address this need.
